Phase 1 of editing and posting photos from NDK is complete, also known as Floor Cosplay. They can now be found here on the site under the photos section and will be on Facebook soon as well. And as usually here is a small
For those that want to know. Phase 2 is photos that are not the Costume Contest and Phase 3 is the Costume Contest. Coming soon.
NDK 24 has come and gone for the year. And it was great to get together with my fellow geeks again. But this year had brought forth lots of new challenges. With both a new hotel and a still active pandemic there were lots of challenges. So what was the overall experience?
Read MoreTomorrow the Colorado geek convention season restarts! NDK is going to be at the Gaylord of the Rockies Friday - Sunday. Before we all gather I did want to give some people reminders of what to expect at the new location.
1) Masks are required for the convention. Given the crowd I look forward to all your geeky face wear.
2) There are plans for a number of food trucks to come to the hotel. So if the restaurants are a bit much you can eat outside! And don’t skip meals, that is bad for your health and could cause you to miss more then a single panel. Plus no one likes a hangry attendee.
3) Parking at the hotel will run $18.95 per day for con attendees. This is cheaper then Spot Hero at $22.00 per day (I just looked before typing this up) but is more expensive then some surrounding locations. There is also the option to park at the 61st & Pena RTD station (or just take the light rail) and use the shuttle that runs every 30 minutes on the 15 and 45 of each hour. Also, don’t park in the surrounding neighborhood. You will get towed and then you will wish you paid for parking.
4) The weather is forecast is low to mid 80’s and sunny. DRINK WATER. You don’t want to be the person that faints from heat stroke. Seriously.
5) People can be gross, and there will be a lot of them. Keep some hand sanitizer in your bag.
6) You have heard to a million times but now, but if you feel sick, stay home. Being patient 0 at the con this year could have much more serious consequences then normal. You don’t want to be the person responsible for 1/4 of all cosplayers in Colorado being in the hospital next week.
And that is all I have. I look forward to seeing people at NDK this year, and for many years to come.
Believe it or not, NDK 2021 is happening in less then a month! The premier Rocky Mountain anime convention will be September 3rd to 5th and will be the first anime convention in in the Denver Metro area since the pandemic started over a year ago. The event will also be held for the first time at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center. Given the move to the new location there were many questions that we had. Fortunately with the help of NDK Press Coordinator were able to get our questions answered by Amanda Liebermann, Executive Director of NDK and CFO of the RMAA.
Read MoreIt has been over a year and a half since Denver’s last foray into the pop culture realm. And with “it” in remission the newly minted FAN EXPO Denver is resurrecting with their first convention since the name change. “FAN EXPO Denver - Special Edition” will be shambling to the Colorado Convention Center over Halloween weekend.
As a Special Edition this convention is going to be limited to 75% of the normal convention size. Tickets are on sale now at FANEXPOHQ.com and they are on Early Bird until July 30th. And for those that have kids 6-12 you can get 2 free tickets with this coupon.
Despite the chaos caused by the current situation there are already two high profile guests scheduled. First up is Mary Poppins himself, Michael Rooker! He will be at the convention Sat and Sunday. Next up is the master of the torn shirt, William Shatner whom shall be attending on Halloween.
Fingers crossed that everything goes as planned and the pop culture geekdom can return from the dead October 29 - 31!
You read that correctly. Denver Pop Culture Con is now FAN EXPO Denver starting in 2022, or late 2021 if they are lucky. What is FAN EXPO? FAN EXPO runs a number of different conventions across the continent. This includes events such as MEGACON in Orlando, FAN EXPO Dallas, FAN EXPO Canada, FAN EXPO Boston, and more that I am too lazy to keep listing. With the addition of Denver to the list this makes FAN EXPO the “largest comic con producer in North America”.
Now to the important parts, what does this mean for the fans and attendees? Well, according to the handy bullet pointed list provided in the announcement, this means that FAN EXPO Denver will:
Attract even more world-class talent to Denver’s annual pop-culture con
Expand experiences of all ages
Increase the reach for local artists and vendors to a national stage
And what does this mean for Pop Culture Classroom (PCC) and all the work they do? From what I gleam from the article they are going to be integral to that “all ages” part of the con. With another wonderful bullet pointed list PCC will:
Provide high-quality education experiences with Kid’s Lab, Gaming and Teen Lounge, and other programs
They will be the featured charity and FAN EXPO Denver to provide vital funding for year round nonprofit work
Spend more time working with the community and classrooms doing more year-round events to spark literacy, learning, imagination and inclusive communities through pop culture
And we really need that last one to shake off some bad stereotypes of the pop culture community. Fingers crossed we get to see how this partnership pulls through sooner then later.
You read that right friends. Denver Pop Culture Con has been delayed . They have moved from 4th of July weekend to Thanksgiving weekend; they must like their holidays. This was not a choice made easily by the staff at DPCC, but out of necessity. Currently the Colorado Convention Center that hosts DPCC is going to be re-purposed as an additional hospital to help those afflicted with COVID-19. In order keep as many people safe and healthy has possible the decision to delay was made.
Good news is that we with geeks friends and family have a wonderful place to do our Christmas Shopping this year!. Gotta look for that silver lining.
Daku Con 2019 is now history. And as such it has been immortalized in photos that are now live in the Photos -> Anime section. Little warning ahead of time for those at the office, some of the cosplay is more risque then what is normally seen on this site and at Denver conventions. So maybe browse these on your phone instead of your work computer.
Daku Con 2019 is almost here. On November 15th - 17th at the Radisson Hotel Denver - Aurora the 3rd occurrence of Denver’s only 18+ geek convention is happening. This years theme is the “Year of Fantasy”, which means we should see some cool fantasy inspired decor to direct you around the hotel on where to find what.
