Denver Comic Con 2014 - Day 3 Wrap Up
/Whew, what a weekend! The final day included more wandering around the convention floor and attending some panels.
The first panel discussion was "Overcoming Sexism in Geek Culture", with panelists Kronda Seibert, Vivian Caethe, and Kathryn Renta. I'll be posting more about this panel later, but the main take away points where as follows: women make up a substantial portion of the geek population, they are often discriminated against wherein a higher bar for entry into the community is placed before them, and that one of the most important things that needs to happen in the community is for geeks to hold each other accountable for appropriate behavior.
The second panel I attended was showcasing the swordsmith work of Peter Lyon who works for Weta Workshop. He discussed the process of creating the hero swords (the prop swords made with actual steel and wood) and the creation of the various other prop swords from these master versions. Peter's estimated production time and cost for an "average" hero sword? 50 to 120 hours and $5,000.
I hope everyone's convention experience was as good as mine. Hopefully we see you all again next year! Game on!
