“Like some Dingus word-writer is gonna know better than me to show how amazing I am...”-The Merc With The Mouth
Em here! I picked up the new Deadpool game on Tuesday, and thought I would give you guys a few tid bits without spoiling too much!
As of now, if you know about Deadpool you can expect lots of sweet weapons, dirty jokes, funny phrases, silly actions and of course fourth-wall breaking. So if you like this stuff and Deadpool (and how could you not?), you'll probably dig the game. To be honest even if you're not much of a gamer/comic reader, you'll still find it entertaining at least. It's super funny!
For gameplay, there are a few bases I want to cover. First, there are a fair amount of cool weapons and upgrades that don't take too long to afford (in Deadpool points that is). You're literally battling enemies 90% of the time, so this helps keep things from getting too old, too fast. From the upgrade menu you can choose from a few guns and there are also a variety of melee weapons and gadgets to use as well. It's neat to have some different melee weapons to play with. You often get stuck with just using your fists. Plus, who doesn’t like kicking butt with katanas or big hammers? I think the only other time I have used a hammer in battle is SSB....
Besides that, Deadpool's regenerative healing is nice. If you step away from the action for a bit, he will gain his health back pretty quickly as well as his suit. This saves some stress trying to find health or remembering to fill it back up before it runs out, which I’m pretty guilty of actually.
Teleporting to avoid enemies and to travel short and long distances comes in handy too. It’s super similar to "Blinking" in Bethesda's Dishonored. And just like Dishonored it’s useful to avoid and disorient enemies or reach different ledges or floors. Until you get this teleport upgrad you can also double jump or jump from wall to wall to reach places as well. It's always good to remember the basics because teleporting too often requires you to recharge it, so you can’t necessarily escape enemies completely all the time.
With all of that said, I think the cut scenes are my favorite part thus far; just because they make me laugh a lot! There was also a super cool 8-bit portion too that I was pretty fond of and a side-scrolling portion as well. I honestly wish there was even more of these random tributes to cover for a few of the negatives. Yes, unfortunately there are some negatives.
There isn't any sort of storyline to this game. I guess it was assumed that we would think this as it's pretty much all non-strategic mass killing. I didn't expect it to be super deep and intricate, but with the minimal storyline and the small range of enemy types, you may get a little weary of the repetitiveness of it all. This is sort of a huge con as you don’t want to finish the game because it’s boring. The game focus also gets less silly when you get further into it. I almost feel as if they just throw all the good jokes out in the beginning for the first couple hours to make you feel like you bought a super awesome game. Not that it’s horrible, but the pacing leaves much to be desired and can you leave you sloughing through to the end.
All in all, I think it's the funny jokes and random actions that make this game worthwhile in itself, but the replay value is pretty low. If you're a huge Deadpool fan I'd say go ahead and drop the $60 bucks for it, if you're not, you may be better off just borrowing it from a friend or playing it used.
